Board Votes to Defy 'No Child' Test Requirement

The Loudoun County School Board approved a resolution last night to defy the federal government's requirement to give grade-level, standardized tests to English learners. The county will continue using an alternative, unapproved test next year that measures language acquisition for approximately 250 new immigrant students.

"This is a position that shows sensitivity to our students who have been in the United States for two years or less and reflects what research tells us about how long it takes to learn English," Sharon D. Ackerman, assistant superintendent for instruction, told the board.

The vote follows similar resolutions by school boards in Fairfax and Arlington counties this year and reflects the mounting debate over what constitutes fair testing under the No Child Left Behind law.
